Thread: f8 key broken?

  1. #1

    Arrow f8 key broken?

I was trying to install windows xp sp2 integraded into a new comp I just built, and everything works fine up until I have to hit F8 to accept the user agreement, and the key does nothing. The other keys work, such as page down, but not the f8 key. I have tried this keyboard (ps/2) and a USB board, same thing.

    Start > Programs > Accessories > Communications > On-Screen Keyboard

Use that and see if it works.

No idea... I just saw the SP2 and skipped the "integrated" part... Not really sure how you can replace an F8 key during an XP install, or why it wouldn't work, for that matter.

Seems to have been a rogue USB device.

    Darth,
From what I can tell, it's not a rogue USB device.

I have several friends that used to use Win 98 and even some with ME, and for reasons of security, etc, I've managed to convince many of them to upgrade to XP.

Because I'm the one that talked them into the upgrade, when they have an issue, they call me and three times in the past two days, I've gotten calls that they can't get the install to work. Every time, as best as I can figure, it's a USB device that causes the problem.
The install goes well until it gets to the "registering devices" step, then it just hangs up.
Unless I've missed it, I can't find anything in MS FAQ that addresses this issue, but at least in four instances, a USB device has been the holdup.
