Most people don't buy them for 64-bit capabilities, or at least they erroneously think they do. People buy them because they perform so well, which has absolutely nothing to do with being 64-bit (with the exception of those who actually get them for use in a 64-bit environment). The 64-bit part has just been convenient for marketing since everyone looks at that and thinks it helps (or even doubles) performance, when in reality the majority of the performance improvement over the K7 line comes from HyperTransport and core optimizations.

As for what programs work, I can't tell you specifically, but I can tell you that the beta has come along way and quite a few work, some with significant performance advantages. You won't see much benefit as a gamer, though, as games seem to get little to no benefit from being run in 64-bit, even for the ones actually compiled in 64-bit. If you do applications such as video encoding or much of really any sort of intensive multimedia applications, you will see very large performance gains using 64-bit software.

I'm hoping you installed WinXP-64 on another partition and you're running a dual boot setup?

Well firefox 1.1 was delayed, so it doesnt look like a 64bit version will be around anytime soon. It already runs much faster (benchmarks) on athlon 64 (even a 3000+ beat a pentium 4 3.6 and the EE if i recall correctly)

You should have installed each OS on its own partition, having them on the same partition is probably creating conflicts between IE amoung other things.
