    Default free Partition recovery software?

I was given a hard drive with a partition I can see in a hex editor but needs to be "turned on" again... is there a freeware program that can recover this? Thanks :)

Do you actually need access to the files on the partition? If not, just delete it and make a new one.

Have you tried simply recovering the partition using chkdsk?

chkdsk doesn't work, and yeah, I want the files that are in there.

programs like Easy Recovery Pro can see the files but they won't recover them without some kind of shareware fee.

That's what I've found with most recovery programs...

There was a thread a helped out with quite a while ago involving a guy in a similar situation. I think we ended up finding a good freeware program to do it. I'll see if I can find the thread.\

Edit: Here's a more recent thread. Somewhat helpful, but I'll keep looking.

I suggest you use Partition Table Doctor to resolve your
problem. The software provides very useful functions:
Backup partition table, Restore partition table, Rebuild
partition table, undelete partition, Fix boot sector,
    rebuild mbr,etc.

First thing I recommend you download the demo version of
    Partition Table Doctor.( http://www.ptdd.com/download.htm )

Run the program and select "Rebuild Partition Table",
    then choose "Interactive" mode.

    FDISK
Boot from a Win98 cd or floppy and boot into DOS
    It's free

*EDIT* I just threw up in Burger King parking lot. I rule.

I've had Partition Doctor eat data. Check out Advanced File System Recovery (google for it). Its like $50, works like a charm.
