Default xp keeps rebooting after welcome screen

    hello peeps,

my xp gets to the welcome screen with the little chaser bar and runs a about as long as it always did then reboots, over and over again. two harddrives hooked up on a abit th7-raid and i can't boot to either of them. ran norton go back to four days ago, and on restart scandisk did its thing, now i got a windows system error as follows:

windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
    <windows root>system32\ntoskrnl.exe

please reinstall a copy of this file..........

now what do i do? i put in the xp disk and with repair console option, typed in "fixboot" but that did nothing, same continuous reboot.
can't seem to get "goback" any farher back than four days either.

if i choose from the xp disk to setup windows xp on my computer, will it present me an option to repair the installation without destroying all my files on the drives?
let me know what you all think about this.........thanks a ton, brian

brianrly, if it was such an easy question why did you ask it?

This should work for you CAFERS.

Insert your Xp disk into the CD drive, choose the boot from command prompt option in the menu that you are presented with

At the command prompt, type in the following:

    copy d:\I386\Driver.cab c:\system32\ntoskrnl.exe /v

where d is the letter of your cd drive

    press enter

Take the CD out when verified and reboot your computer

I have had this problem for a while now but it got worse yesterday when it re-booted 10 times. I eventually gave up and switched it off. Replaced the video card and it started. Put old video card in another machine that I am working on and guess what, it starts re-booting. That video card is now in the bin. It wasn't an issue with a particular make of video card, that one has been fine for a year, it's just that it was failing.

You didn't just throw away a v/c due to the fact that the psu might not have had enough guts to run it?
