    is your 98se still installed?

PC Wizard or Belarc Advisor or Magic jellybean may work with 98se, I cant be sure as I've never tried.

But if they do run on 98se they will recover your cd key from the registry for you

    EDIT: Added hyperlinks

Sometimes if you call Microsoft and explain, they may help you out. Windows 98 is pretty old, but still, they might give you a bit of assistance and then you can say that it is all legal. I had some trouble with my Microsoft Office 2000 a while ago. I put it on my mom's computer and my computer (I didn't read the EULA or the activation thing until it was too late, and I was lazy) and I told her to wait to use Office because I had to take it off. And she used it anyway and activated it, but before I found out I tried to activate and it wouldn't so I called Microsoft and they told me it was activated and registered to my mom. I explained everything to them and they went ahead an activated the copy on my computer also. Which kind of violated the one product-one purchase-one computer-etc thing they have going, but Microsoft saved me from having to buy another copy after I told them about my laziness in reading the product activation thing. I still hate Microsoft tho...
