Thread: What is your take on MCE?

Default What is your take on MCE?

I have never installed MCE on a computer before. I was wondering what people think about it. The people I am making the computer for will be working with video, music, pictures etc. Is MCE better than pro for that? I am adding a tuner also for video capture and to be able to watch tv etc. Please get back about your thoughts. Thanks.

Media center edition is rebadged XP Home with a new skin tossed in. Not worth it if you already have PRO.

MCE - crap. No better than Home, maybe worse. TV Tuners do not require nor get anything out of MCE. All recording and playback is best done with third-party software.

From my experience, MCE is exactly the same as Pro (so much better than Home as better security/support for multiple CPUs etc), the only thing it can't do is to connect to a domain (like a corporate network), but if its only being used as MCE, then that's not really a problem.

MCE is better if its gonna be used on a TV as the remote for it makes it worth while to navigate the specific MCE interface, which is easy to use, but probably no real benefit over normal XP. Its basically a "cheap" version of Pro, but with all the features (plus a nice media GUI) except that domain thing i already mentioned. (If you need pro features its probably worth getting, other than that, there's no real benefit).

The remote and UI are okay, but third-party software and software included with some tuners are superior.

MCE does not support all of the networking features of Pro, and it extends beyond being allowed to join a domain. It's at almost the exact same level of networking interoperability with Pro as Home, with the exception of Remote Desktop being available in MCE.

IMO, it's Home with EFS, RDC, and some bloat. I can't think of a very good reason to choose it over Home, and I certainly take Pro over MCE anyday.

XP Home + any decent tuner card/remote is SO MUCH better than MCE and almost the same cost as well.

XP PRO & media portal - kicks the arse of MCE (I've been running both) - btw media portal is free

MCE can be very picky about which card works
