Default is there a program that replaces explorer.exe?

I noticed that i can close explorer.exe and my computer still runs, there just isnt a program to handle the icons or to organize the open programs. Is there some kind of program that replaces this and maybe has more features, like a mac style or something? Just wondering because i know there is style XP which just changes how the PC looks. Thanks.

There are plenty of shell replacements available. Back when people still used 98SE, I would always recommend replacement of Explorer using the third-party AstonShell. I don't know how the quality compares to modern shells, but it used to be very good back in the day.

That said, for all intents and purposes, Explorer is a capable enough shell with few real problems, provided you're on a Windows 2000/XP/Server/Vista.

I used windowblinds on my main rig before it blew.

I even re-tooled the boot screen, logon screen and the shell. A little mod here and there, a fixup of photos lifted from the net, photoshopped the in-game screenshots and it was so utterly nice, I even tricked my friends that it was Windows XP D.E. (DotA Allstars Edition) and they were like saying, "Wow, where did you get that!" and "Nice OS you got there!" and "Can you give me the installer... pleeese!"

HeeHeeHee... Sometimes I Like that, and they fell for it.
