Unhappy Vista SP1 cannot access XP

I have checked and followed numerous sites... vista64 and a 1/2 dozen other sites... none of them so far allowed to to connect my Vista to my XP SP3 PCs... I can see but cannot connect either way... all firewalls are disabled on both PCs. tried to fresh install XP SP3 and Vista SP1 still no go. XP to XP is fine for any version, 2000 to XP, XP to win2000, XP to 2003 all fine.. but Vista to XP or Vista to any versions do not work even to Vista. I am sure some gurus here have solved this. Even changing Network NICs, Speed from Auto to 100, 10, etc etc...swapping it, checking bios, permissions in Vista and XP. ideas?
