Im having trouble getting SP1 to install. I tired dl the full install and via windows update. Each time I run it, during the first 5-10 seconds, it bails on me and says ''service pack 1 setup canceled'. If I click on the buttons, I can sometimes get to the 3rd screen (investigating system). I have a legal system, so I know its not that. I dont have stylexp installed or any other themes.

    c:\windows\svcpack.log says

    "
    Destination:
    Version:
    ***

InstallFromFunction call in inf section "BuildType.DirId" failed.
    ***

    Failed Deleting C:\WINDOWS\system32\jvminst.tmp 2
    ***

    Service Pack 1 Setup canceled.
    ***"

Ive tried searching 4 different forums and havent found mention of this. I have a pretty basic system and some tweaks via xteq's xsetup and Ive had it happen on my work and home machines.

    Any ideas would be appreciated.

how much free hard drive space have you got?

    my other question is
have you played with the security levels - that could affect wether sp1 can delete files - try copying the offending file somewhere else and manualy delete it

also run a scandisk to check if you HD has any problems

the other thning to note is usually MS release a sp1a a few months after the release of the original service pack - most network admins will not install a service pack untill its been out at least 2 months

Also if you've got a legal version - contact MS - they'll be able to give you a lot more info (after all isnt that way you paid for it)

    hehe

    Thanks for your suggestions.

I have about 150gig free on a error-free raid array.

About security levels, I am the admin at work (hehe) and have all privledges and rights (and the BS) that comes w/ it.

I could give MS a call, but last time I did that, I was on hold for a few hours and they never solved my problems ( so far Me = 3, MS = 0 ) Another problem w/ that, is my home version is a student version of XP (I just graduated and got it during my life as a student (for $6 too)). One of the perks of having the student version is... you guessed it, no support and no documentation (who reads it anyways ;-) )

About the failed file deletion... whats interesting, is the file doesnt exist. So, Im not sure whats going on.

Nothing in the event logs. I even went through and re-enabled and started all those useless services MS likes to enable. Im upto date on the patches etc and did NOT install the leaked sp1 from abit ago...

    Any other suggestions?

it could be the raid controller ( I wouldn't this is likely thou)

seeing thats its happening at work and at home, it would seem like you've done some patch/hack that sp1 doesn't like. What non standard programs do you have on both machines?

InstallFromFunction call in inf section "BuildType.DirId" failed
I'm guessing that this means it can't work out what build your OS is - so I'd check to find out what build your OS is
xteq xsetup has an option to put your build number on the desktop

I'm frustrated too.. I know I have the perfectly legit copy of XP Pro yet the SPI installation gave me this error message.

    Service Pack 1 Setup Error
    Failed to install catalog files

What the heck is that? I tried the tweak , but gave me the same error. I haven't seen anybody post this error message yet.

What's is not right with my system? I have Promise RAID 0 and have no error whatsover.

    Please help.

I have a laptop with XP Pro here that had similar issues with SP1. No matter what I did the install would not complete. [I only tried the downloaded full version of Sp1. I don't have the patience for the Window update way..

Any way I rebooted into safe mode and reran the SP1 installl from safe mode logged in as Administrator and the install worked.

i think i had to do that because i've been messing with gpedit.msc trying to lock down the laptop.;)

Same thing was happening to me.

    Have you ever run XP-Antispy?
I re-ran it and unchecked all of the boxes (had to right click and choose "Reset to Initial State" to enable). And now SP1 isn't closing on it's own anymore with that error. Seems to be installing right now.

Edit: Finished sucessfully. Even did it over VNC from school with no troubles, rebooted fine / re-enabled all AntiSpy options again.

Thanks for the info. I was having the same problem. SP1 would stop installing right after the first or second install screen. I even tried using the change your product key just encase someone had duplicated the key from a keygen and used it somehow and had black listed the key I use on the network. The confusion I had was one computer would update but none of the others. I guess I missed some settings on that one with anti spy. Now the network is updating and I'm a happy boy.: party ha
    Thanks again
