As some of you may have noticed, DirectX 8.1b is not available for Windows XP without downloading the Service Pack 1.

Who here hasn't noticed that the SP1 is plagued with bugs? I, for one, don't plan on running SP1 until MS finds a way to actually make it work. I like do do things such as access my email in outlook, and browse the web. Enough ranting!

Here's a link to download the DirectX 8.1b Redistribution Pack for 98/ME/2k/XP. This file was intended for distribution by game developers with the final version of their games.

I've checked pretty far into this download. The reason DX8.1b is offered in XPSP1 is covered in MSKB article Q321178.

<a href="http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q321178" target="_blank">Q321178: DirectX 8.1 Potential Issues in Games That Use Software Vertex Processing</a>

"Under very rare circumstances, games that use the Software Fixed Function Transform and Lighting functionality in DirectX 8.1 may stop responding (hang) while you play a game... It is unlikely that you will experience this issue because games that have been identified as potentially having this issue already include the fix."

Now, it's up to you if you want to download this or not. You can base your opinions on whether or not this error would/could apply to you. Just wanted to let you guys know that this download IS out there.
