The windows 7 Home Premium Family Pack (32-bit/64-bit) has a single key that can be installed on 3 "home" computers.
I bought the family pack in late 2010 for about $130 and used the clean install method on my systems.
Availability of the family pack is hit or miss, but you should be able to find a legal package by searching the internet.

depending on where you live, ebay might be an option. It depends on the local laws. In Germany f.ex. you can buy the OEM version cheap on eBay as it's legal to sell them separately there - then you wouldn't have to settle for a home edition (in case you end up having to spend money that is).
I got myself an Ultimate version for my HTNAS for 50euro
My advice - never visit a short-url, no matter who gives it to you. You can't trust any source at any time when you don't know your target

from Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade Family Pack for XP or Vista users, 3 User Licence (PC DVD): Amazon.co.uk: Software:
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade Family Pack for XP or Vista users, 3 User Licence (PC DVD), not currently available

There may be some differences between USA and European versions.
The home premium version does not have some features that the more expensive versions have.
The family pack version does allow you to perform three installations on three of your home computers.

I had win2k on my systems and performed a clean install on new ssd boot drives.
Even though it's extra work, I prefer to do a clean installation when upgrading the operating system.

So what is involved in a clean install? Do you format the HDD first to wipe everything off it then boot from a windows disk to install the newer version? These might be silly questions but I've never formatted a HDD or installed/upgraded an OS before.

    My usual windows install steps
    - backup what you need on files/settings/bookmarks
    - boot from windows install disk
    - remove all partitions from my boot drive
    - and then just install on it, the install disk formats it itself when not already
My advice - never visit a short-url, no matter who gives it to you. You can't trust any source at any time when you don't know your target

Well i just want to say you here that you just make sure to your computer's or laptop's specifications first and them install the windows 7 because this is heavy and latest features windows and requires a heavy spec for installation so you should make it sure first and then install this..........
