    Hi,

When I bought my computer, it came preinstalled with Windows XP, but the only CD included was a "System Recovery" CD. When XP crashed, the only way I could have reinstalled it with this CD would have been to wipe my hard drives (which I was not going to do), so I borrowed my friend's XP installation CD and used it to reinstall XP. I then downloaded a crack to bypass the annoying 30-day activation problem, which I didn't really have any qualms about doing because I had already paid for one copy of XP, when I bought the computer, and I shouldn't have to buy another.
Anyway, now that I've plead my case for not simply trying to "steal" XP, I simply want to know how many people out there recommend using the TweakTown instructions for installing Service Pack 1. What problems have you run into, what tricks have you figured out, what should I take into consideration, etc? All information is greatly appreciated.

This subject has been well and truly covered and to the point where the forum was becoming downright boring. If you really need some opinions do a search through the forum... there are plenty of answers.

I apologise for the fact that this post has no useful information for you but the number of posts from first time posters on this subject was rapidly becoming a pain in the neck!

I spent about thirty minutes searching the board, but all I came across were unanswered questions or very specific questions which might or might not apply to me. That's why I was hoping somebody could give me a basic thumbs up or thumbs down, or maybe a thumbs up or thumbs down with a qualifier, such as "it works fine, except that it resets your logon password" or "only use it if you need the Service Pack to run necessary software," etc. I'm sorry if I'm reapeating an old topic, which I'm sure I am. I don't need instruction, just advice.

    Thanks,

    Douva

For a retail version of XP Pro, you need a new key (you can get a legit key from M$ if you pay, or try the Bluelist keygen if you want to, but pls remember its Pro, not Corp), then activate it online. There are reports that even for a working key, M$ activiation centre may return it as invalid, but if the numbers remain in the boxes instead of being cleared out as they should, then you have a good chance of success if you try it say 12 hours later. I heard M$ may lock your IP, so if you can, use dailup (as you may get a differenct IP each time you connect).

    Cheers.

Why would you want to install SP1 anyway?, all the fixes are out there

Because there are alot more fixes built into sp1 that are not already out there. Also ever checked your add/remove list? I have 30 something things in that list all are of which pre-sp1. Do you relize that all of those dissapear afte ryou install sp1? It makes things more manageable. And all the little vulnerabilities like the ones where peeps can delete a directory from across the internet. That's built into sp1 but not avilable anywhere else. Of course there is a utility/replace a file that fixes that problem as well. ;)

The hot fix list is no big prob & Steve Gibson has written a 30 K fix for that vulnerability & it has no after effects like SP1 can have.

    Get it here. http://grc.com/xpdite/xpdite.htm
