Thread: How can I create a new Windows XP MBR ?

    I overwrote it long ago when I installed the latest Redhat and accidentaly installed Grub with it :( How can I get my old Windows MBR back ? Can I do it without formatting ?

    you have to boot off of the winxp cd..it's an option under it repair function...it's been a while since i did that, so i can't remember exactly
    I've gone too far and need to move on!

    You don't get repair options , you repair (overwrites windows files) , format and install or use the recovery console.

    it's done though the cd, i'll have to walk back though it later and give you a step by step

    Yeah I've gone thru it , theres simply no feature that you speak of unless you're going thru the recovery console which I have little knowledge of. I've tried a restore but it did nothing but make me have to install all my drivers over again ...

    it probably was recovery console

    I remember that i had to work from a command prompt.

    I won't be able to check on it till tomorrow

    yeah thats the recovery console. I don't know enough about it to use it , any help would be great.

    The easiest way to put back WinXP in the MBR is to get a Win98 boot disk with fdisk. Boot up your machine with the disk and at the command prompt type: fdisk /mbr. Then reboot. Any other bootloaders like Lilo or grub will be gone and WinXP will boot normally.
