I just finished applying your XP tweaks and have run into a problem with my Lexmark Z43 printer. Here is what is happening:

When I finished the tweaks I tried to print the maintenance page of your tweak website but the printer somehow was uninstalled from my system. I reloaded the printer from the printer software and in the middle of the installation, I got to a screen that said "the printer spool has stopped would you like to start it again?" I chose "yes" and the printer installed and worked as normal. I rebooted after the installation and once again, my printer was gone from my system. However, XP "found new hardware" and tried to load the printer on boot-up. It stopped in the middle of the install and gave me and error that said "The RPC server is unavailable." I went to the printer folder and chose "add a printer" but it gave me the same thing. I once again installed from the software and got the same message "the printer spool has stopped would you like to start it again?" I said yes and it worked fine untill I rebooted..... Yet again the printer is gone.

So I am stuck in a vicious cirlce and cant seem to get my way out. The printer worked fine prior to the tweaks so I know it must be something I did. I checked the services and the RPC is running and automatic.

    What should I do???

One more thing. I found if I say yes to the question "do you want to start the spool again" when loading from the printer software and then cancel the rest of the install after that point, my printer shows back up in the folder and works. So somehow the SPOOL has turned off and turns off every time I shut down my PC and that is what is keeping my printer from working.

    Does this make any sense?

Though its meant for PI but i hope he won't mind me answering this...:bounce:
Actually shane you stopped a service named "Print Spooler". Its specifically mentioned in the guide that if you have a printer installed than you should not stop the service, but i think that you ignored that thing and stopped the service.
Now go to Services and start the "Print Spooler" service again and set it to "Automatic" this time. That should solve your problem...
and hey...if you ever get any other problem like this...PI has his own thread for the guide and its at the start of the windows forum. You can always use that rather than starting a new thread. PI solves all the problems in that thread.
Firstly I did the job of PI and now i m sounding like a mod...not gud...

Unfortunatly, I am not in front of my PC right now so I cant check that setting. I do remember that warning about the printer and I am almost positive that I did not disable it. However, it wouldnt be the first time that my brain thought one thing and my body did another!!

Thanks, I will double check it tomorrow.

What asklepios said is correct, you've probably just disabled the Print Spooler service. All you need to do is go into Service and set it to Automatic.

If that doesn't work, we'll see where we go from there!
