I have a very standard Dell desktop that is about 3 years old. I am about to make the upgrade to XP Home and I am also swapping out the stock cd-rom drive with a new cdrw/dvd combo drive. My question is, do I install the new OS first or the drive? I am concerned that my stock cd-rom drive will not support the bootable xp disc. Furthermore, I am running a copy of XP pro that I borrowed from a friend to try out and now the grace period is expired so I'm afraid to reboot. I plan on doing a clean install of XP Home. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Do the drive first then clean install XP. ;)

thanks for the quick reply. one more quick question, is it worth keeping the stock cd-rom drive for any reason and installing the new drive in a free bay? thanks.

You install the drive first. It will be the best way for you as it would require no-reboot and you will get all the drivers loaded for the drive at the time of your fresh install.
In anycase...wait for a few hours till some expert like PI, Mr. C or Wiggo gives you a sure shot advice...but my advice will be...install the drive first and then fresh install your XP.
Before you do a clean install of XP don't forget to follow PI's guide...:thumb:alright i m slow in typing and lucky you...you got wiggo in...:p

It can be helpful to install the old CD drive as the slave to the new one and use the old one for normal CD reading purposes so the the new one lasts longer. ;)

you can always remove your old drive later from your new XP insall.
XP has shown problems with hot-swapping your CD ROM drives so you can use your stock drive if your new drive doesn't install well.
Keep your stock drive for now...just remember to make the new drive master.

I don't have a guide for a clean install of XP. I have an XP Guide to use after a reformat and reinstall of XP!

I have a link on how to reformat and reinstall windows in my 2nd XP Guide btw, in case you're wondering. Due out soon (yes, yes..soon!).
