You can get older versions of software (like Realplayer 8) from http://www.oldversion.com before they become too intrusive.

TinRA is indeed a good tool to convert RA to AVI files, so you don't really need RealPlayer if you use that.

Generally speaking, both Quicktime and RealPlayer codecs are unlikely to be supported by many (if any) other players because they're so proprietary.

Well it helps to convert the files you have saved on your machine to a confortable format but all hell breaks lose when you wanna see a streaming video clip from a news site and its in .ram format...grrrrr...
I am against real player since don't know when...damn that thing...:shoot2:

I would have to agree with the streaming issue. I really dislike any site that does not give you a choice as to the streaming format. It seems like a conspiracy to load your PC with a bunch of junk. "The requested media could not be played please download the latest bloatware from fillmypcwithjunk.garbage!"

WMP 6.4 is still my default media player thanks to all the conversion tools. No excess "stuff".

I have tried TINRA with Real One and Real 8. It did not work when Real One was installed, only with Real 8. Not sure if it works with no Real PLayer installed. (I think not as it is a small command line program and uses the player to decompress the media.)

yeah absolutely right...and the biggest frustration creeps in when u don't have another source for that clip and you are like stuck with hell. only way out is either forget abt the thing or load the sh*t...and i always chose the former thing...

That's because TinRA uses the Realmedia codec from Realplayer - it doesn't contain the codec itself (I should have said that earlier). You're right, you need to have RealPlayer installed. Just install Realplayer 8 - it can easily be set in the options to be non-intrusive.

RealOne on the other hand is a nightmare...I gave up on trying to customize that baby and uninstalled it half an hour after installing it.

    Guys,

Just thought to mention with 'mov' files. You can install and NOT view with Quicktime if you use IrfanView. For some strange reason QT makes my desktop shake n refresh at different stages. I look at the mov's in IrfanView.

It's a hellified fw viewer and he's been doing it right for as long as I've been around. Changing the file is best in my humble but I just watch clips and I can get at most of the streams if I really want em.

IView I think does Realaudio also. It does all this at no waste of resource like those apps. Just ad it's plugins and let it take charge. You can't take the other apps out though:( Just disable and un-associate.

Ive never installed realplayer since v8
or quicktime since 4 first came out.

In the event of getting a god-forsaken .mov or realplayer file, i just import & export it thru <insert any of the various programs out there that do it) and save as a more suitable format. ...reduces quality, yeah, but then again- there wasnt any quality with those formats to begin with. :)
