Windows Messenger or AIM? Windows is a standard setting for Microsoft stuff. It shows up as a little green dude in your system tray. Assuming IE6, here is what you need to do...

    - Open up Outlook Express
    - Go to Tools --> Options --> General tab
    - Make sure the block labeled "Automatically log onto Windows Messenger" is unchecked.

If it is AIM, then you will have to uninstall it, and in that endeavor May the FORCE be with you.

I have never used AIM but may be AIM on your PC is set to start automatically and it does so, as soon as it finds that you are being connected to internet (which you must have done at the time of using OE).
First check from the preferences of AIM to stop it from starting automatically.
Select the My AIM menu, click Options, and click Edit Preferences. Click the General tab, and uncheck Start AIM when Windows starts.
If that doesn't help try searching for an option in preferences related to automatic start. If everything fails...I would relate to Darthtanion's advice...uninstall that crappy thing and start using Trillian .

I've had a similiar problem like this before when two exe files somehow got cross linked so when I opened up one of them the other one would open up too. I've also had netscapes uninstall program come up when I was trying to install/uninstall a program.
