hi, i am new to overclocking and need some advice, i would like to go from 2.5ghz to 3ghz to improve gaming. if i set the cpu freq to 400 x 7.5 which voltage option should i use? there are about 4 options (i think the highest is 3.45v). the ram-cpu ratio is 5-4...can i unlink the ram from the cpu?
also i am using kingston hyper-x ddr2 8500 ram (2x2gb) this is set at ddr800 but i noticed that he ram voltage can be increased to 2.2v in the bios settings....can i put the voltage up and run the ramon 8500 settings? sorry for all the questions
    many thanks

        Re: o/cing q8300 on g31m-gs r2.0

Your motherboard has limited overclocking features.
From page 8 in your motherboard user manual:
        WARNING
Please realize that there is a certain risk involved with overclocking, including adjusting the setting in the BIOS, applying Untied Overclocking Technology, or using the third-party overclocking tools. Overclocking may affect your system stability, or even cause damage to the components and devices of your system. It should be done at your own risk and expense. We are not responsible for possible damage caused by overclocking.

        CAUTION!
        1. FSB1600-CPU will operate in overclocking mode. Under this situation, PCIE frequency will also be overclocked to 120MHz. Besides, if you want to overclock the CPU you adopt from FSB800 to FSB1066, you need to adjust the jumpers. If you adopt FSB1600-CPU, you also need to adjust the jumpers. Please refer to page 20 for proper jumper settingsTMTMTM 64-bit / VistaTM / XP 64-bit / XP SP1 or SP2 / 2000 SP4.
PCI-e frequency = 120MHz is MUCH HIGHER than I've ever seen and this seems awfully excessive for any motherboard, especially a lower end motherboard.
You will probably need 2.10 - 2.20 volts for your memory.
Your cpu might need a slight increase in voltage, but the cpu voltage should not need to be any higher than about 1.30 volts.
I'll look more more closely at the overclocking option later.

Given the minimal o/c options, I suggest that you try to run your memory with 4-4-4-12 primary memory timings.
There is virtually no real world difference with memory at 800MHz with tight memory timings and 1066MHz with looser 5-5-5-15 timings.
My 4 x 2GB HyperX T1 DDR2-1066 memory is stable with 4-4-4-10 timings at 876MHz, but my P35 motherboard is a much better overclocking motherboard with many more bios options that help with stability.

          Re: o/cing q8300 on g31m-gs r2.0

hi, i have been looking at the bios and i have a few more questions to ask (sorry about this)
my dram options above the 1.8v that im running at are 1.965v, 2.029v, 2.086v, 2.144v and 2.201v. it states that the last 2 are for o/c use only. do i need to put up to 2.2v to adjust timings?
also should the dram rcomp be on auto or man (its on auto by default)
there is also memory flexability option?
nb has auto or 1.272v & 1.319v manual options (on auto at present)
vtt is on auto (vcore is running at about 1.264 - 1.272 on cpuz) manual options are 1.21v, 1.32v, 1.40v & 1.51v - which voltage do you suggest to up cpu from 333 to 400? (i tried 400 with auto on and would not boot to bios) and are vtt and vcore the same thing?
also i have untied the pci-e so it stays at 100mhz.
one last question, how do i untie the memory from the cpu or will the ratio correct itself from 5.4 to 1.1 by itself?
im sorry for all the questions and am very greatful for all your help

            Re: o/cing q8300 on g31m-gs r2.0

Your original cpu settings were 7.5 x 333 for 2.50GHz.
Trying for 7.5 x 400 for 3.00GHz is too big of a jump.
I don't see any bios options for increasing Cpu core voltage.
VTT refers to Cpu Termination and this setting is sometimes increased to help with stability, but it shouldn't be set higher than cpu core voltage. Posting a cropped screen-shot from CPU-z will give us an idea of the cpu core voltage.
It will also help if you include Memset's information in the screen-shot when you click on the SPD and >> options.
            Memset freeware -- Tweakers.fr

Try splitting the difference and go with 7.5 x 366 with the following settings:
            Code:
            CPU Frequency (MHz) = 366
            PCIE Frequency (MHz) = 100
Spread Spectrum = Disabled (AUTO might be OK)
Enhance Halt State = Disabled (for now)
Intel (R) Virtualization tech = Disabled
            CPU Thermal Throttling = Enabled
            No-Excute Memory Protection = Enabled
Intel (R) SpeedStep(tm) tech = Disabled (for now)
            On-Demand Clock Modulation = AUTO
            DRAM Frequency = 400 (it looks like there are only 2 options: [333MHz (DDRII667)] and [400MHz (DDRII800)]
            Flexibility Option
The default value of this option is [Disabled]. It will allow better tolerance for
memory compatibility when it is set to [Enabled].
            DRAM tCL = AUTO
            DRAM tRCD = AUTO
            DRAM tRP = AUTO
            DRAM tRAS = AUTO
--> The above 4 settings will probably result in 5-5-5-15 settings
Primary Graphics Adapter = PCI Express
            DRAM Voltage = 2.029V
NB Voltage = 1.272 (AUTO might be OK)
VTT Voltage = 1.21V (AUTO might be OK)
+1.5V Voltage = 1.5651V (AUTO might be OK)
Intelligent Energy Saver = Disabled (for now)
DRAM RCOMP Setting = ? (let us know what options are available)
            ACPI HPET Table = Enabled
